Error codeC81 / C83
ApplianceCooktop
Quick answer
C81 and C83 are one overheating message on a JennAir cooktop. Free the airflow, wait, then reset power.
Model compatibility: JennAir reuses codes across series and model years, so C81 / C83 may mean something different on another appliance or generation. Confirm this against your model’s documentation and record your full model number before acting.
Plain language
What this code means
The electric cooktop overheated and its automatic shutoff turned the surface cooking area off.
Both C81 and C83 tell you the same thing on a JennAir electric cooktop: it got too hot. JennAir’s electric cooktop help page gives the two codes one shared remedy, so they are handled together below.
What has happened
The surface cooking area overheated, and the automatic shutoff responded by turning that area off. Until the cooktop has cooled and been powered up again, nothing on the surface will heat.
What JennAir tells you to do
Begin by setting every surface control to OFF, and switch off the oven too if there is one under the cooktop. Next, make sure nothing is restricting airflow to the bottom of the cooktop. If no oven sits underneath, open the cabinet doors below the cooktop and look for stored items pushed up against its underside; take them out of the way.
After that, wait 5 minutes for the unit to cool and turn the cooktop on to see if it works normally. When the code still appears, turn off the circuit breaker that feeds the cooktop, keep it off for one minute, switch it back on, and watch the display for a further minute.
The cabinet below
An installation with no oven beneath it leaves the underside of the cooktop facing a storage cabinet. Items stored against that surface can restrict airflow to the bottom of the cooktop, and that is the situation the cabinet-door check is meant to catch.
If the code returns anyway
JennAir names no failed part for C81 or C83 and lists no further owner steps. Once cooling, clear airflow and a breaker reset have all been tried, stop using the cooktop and arrange a visit. The unit is connected to household power, so leave the glass top and everything under it to a qualified technician.
Codes worth comparing
C82 is a cookware matter on the same electric cooktops: wrong size, or an empty pan.
F2 also reports a surface cooking area that is too hot.
F8 is the shutoff that follows a surface area being left on for too long.
