Error codeC82
ApplianceCooktop
Quick answer
C82 is about what is on the element: a wrong-size pan, or one that is empty or boiled dry.
Model compatibility: JennAir reuses codes across series and model years, so C82 may mean something different on another appliance or generation. Confirm this against your model’s documentation and record your full model number before acting.
Plain language
What this code means
Cookware problem: wrong size, or the pan or pot is empty or dry, so the surface area overheats and shuts off when the pan is empty or dry.
When C82 appears on a JennAir electric cooktop, look at the cookware first. JennAir lists two causes: a pot or pan whose size does not suit the cooking area, and one that is empty or has boiled dry.
Picking the right pan
Size, material and position of a pan decide how much of the element’s wattage actually gets to the food, JennAir says. A good pan has:
a flat, smooth base,
straight sides,
a tight-fitting lid,
medium-to-heavy metal construction.
The base should match the surface cooking area. JennAir allows a difference of 1/2 inch (1.3 cm) either way: the pan may be up to that much smaller than the element, or extend up to that much beyond it.
Empty or boiled-dry cookware
JennAir states that you should never cook in an empty pan or one that has boiled dry. When that happens the surface cooking area overheats and the automatic shutoff comes on.
Steps after C82
If the oven is on, turn it off.
Remove the pan and wait 5 minutes; the automatic shutoff must clear before you start the area again.
Switch the cooktop on and try a pan of the correct diameter with food or liquid in it.
Should C82 return, turn the breaker off for a minute, back on, and watch the cooktop for one minute.
When cookware is not the answer
JennAir gives no failed-part explanation for C82. If it appears with suitable cookware after a cool-down and a power reset, have the cooktop inspected instead of restarting it repeatedly.

C81 / C83: the cooktop itself overheated, and airflow underneath is the check.
