JennAir Range E5 and ES Codes: Energy Save Mode

Content status: Verified

Error code E5, ES
Appliance Wall Oven
Quick answer

The range is not broken: ES means Energy Save has switched the display off while the range sits idle.

Model compatibility: JennAir reuses codes across series and model years, so E5, ES may mean something different on another appliance or generation. Confirm this against your model’s documentation and record your full model number before acting.

Plain language

What this code means

ES (E5) means Energy Save mode is active, which turns the display off to save power; it is a feature on some models, not a fault.

Not a fault

A JennAir range showing ES or E5 is no cause for alarm. The manufacturer lists this as a feature of certain models, and the range itself has no defect.

How Energy Save works

With the mode active, the control and clock go to sleep and the display is turned off whenever nobody is using the range, cutting its electricity use. On a range with Energy Save enabled, this is what happens:

  1. Five idle minutes pass while the clock face is the only thing displayed.
  2. ES appears, followed by On, and the pair is shown two times.
  3. The screen goes dark and stays that way.
  4. Touching a control key (Bake or Broil, say) or opening the oven door brings it back, after which keys respond normally.

Switching the mode

  • To enter: make sure the oven and control are idle and the clock is displayed, then keep CLOCK pressed for ten seconds. You get a beep and ES then On, twice, and the clock reappears.
  • To exit: keep CLOCK pressed for another ten seconds. After a beep the display gives ES then Off, twice, and the clock is back.
  • To wake a dark display: any key press shows the Time of Day.

When ES refuses to leave

The page proposes a power reset only in that situation: breaker off for a minute, breaker on, a minute of observation, and a check that the oven works.

Further reading

Owners are referred by JennAir to the Owner’s Manual, where the “Electronic Oven Controls” section applies, and to the Manuals and Literature page for documents matching their own appliance.
